Cycling for Dresden

During a fund raising bicycle
tour across America in 2000
Ullrich Lange had the idea to
organize a similar event in
Germany for the reconstruction
of the
Frauenkirche in Dresden.
Ulrich Lange retired in 1995 as
the President of the American
subsidiary of a major German
Manufacturer of mining
equipment. He was born in
Berlin and he came to the US in
1964. During the war he lived
in Dresden, but he wasn’t there
during the February bombing.
But his family house was
totally destroyed.
On his tour across America he
met a German solo biker.
Ogether they organized the
tour, which took place in early
June.
Fourteen riders from Germany,
Spain and the US met in Berlin
on June 2. The
next two days they toured
Berlin and Potsdam. On June 5
the actual riding
part of the tour began. They
rode to Dresden via
Tangermuende, Wittenberg and
Meissen. Along the way they
stopped at various points of
interest. At
Diesbar Seusslitz they visited
a church also built by George
Baehr, the builder of the
Frauenkirche. In Dresden they
had a reception at the
Frauenkirche on June 12. There
was also a brief sermon
presented by Pastor
Stephan Fritz. The tour was a
great success, raising a total
of DM17.000 (~ $ 8000).
